Watch Greek TV in Australia

Melbourne has one of the largest Greek communities in the world. Here is how families from Oakleigh to Marrickville to Adelaide watch the channels from home.

In short

To watch Greek TV in Australia you need an IPTV subscription with the Greek channels, an app on your TV or Firestick, and an NBN connection of about 15 Mbps or more per screen. Greek evening shows air in the early morning on the east coast, so catch-up matters as much as live TV.

The usual ways, and why many families switch

Australian Greeks have tried it all: a satellite dish with an ethnic package, free-to-air programmes on SBS, clips on YouTube and channel websites that block Australian visitors. The satellite route works but means a dish, an installer and a yearly bill; the free options cover only a slice of what is on in Greece.

IPTV brings the full line-up, including the big private stations and sports, through the internet you already pay for. Nothing to bolt to the roof.

What you need

  • An NBN plan of 25 Mbps or more for a household with one or two TVs.
  • A Firestick 4K, an Android TV box, a recent Samsung or LG TV, or an Apple TV.
  • An IPTV app; TiviMate is the favourite on Firestick (Firestick guide).
  • A Greece IPTV plan, after the free test.

Living a day behind Athens

Greek prime time lands between about 03:00 and 06:00 in Melbourne and Sydney. Most of our Australian customers watch the morning bulletin from Athens in their afternoon and use catch-up for the evening series. For Super League matches, set an alarm or watch from the start on catch-up before checking the score.

First time: Australian summer (about November to March). Second time: Australian winter (about April to October). Queensland and Western Australia do not change clocks, which is why their gap moves by one hour only because Greece changes.

Practical

Tips from customers who live there

Use catch-up, not your alarm

Watch last night's Greek series with breakfast. On catch-up channels it plays from the start.

Firestick on the old TV

An older TV that cannot install apps works fine with a Firestick in the HDMI port.

Grandparents in another suburb

Two homes, two screens: one 2-screen plan covers both, each on its own TV.
